When I say "Solar heat penetrates more deeply into water than that it does into soil."

Was "Solar heat penetrates more deeply" replaced with "that"?

If what I guess is right, what kind of the word "that" is it?

Solar heat penetrates more deeply into water than it does into soil. IMO, that shouldn't be used here at all.
