Thanks to / because of

"Thanks to" can be substituted for "because of"? For example, "Thanks to your help, I understood it" or "Because of your help, I understood it" . In my non native English speaker sense, I might use "thanks to" in a positive situation and "because of" in both ways or a negative situation? Please could you enlighten me again?
