Example: As he became a leader, thanks to his wife's connections, they started respecting him.

Thanks, sir. What i am saying: because of his wife's connections, he is now a leader, and becuase he is now a leader, they respect him. To convey all this in one sentence, i thought i could use 'thanks to' in the middle.
