Thanks much

0 I'm in a discussion with someone over 'thanks much'. Why don't we say that when we do say 'thank you very/so much'? Why is it wrong if we contract to thanks and exclude the intensifier? Is it just a simple 'it doesn't sound right'? 0-

0I've heard "thanks much" and "thanks muchly" in a jokey way, though. How would this compare for you with "many thanks" which people tend to say on the phone?02br

0But I do hear "thanks so much" all the time! (Is it just an Americanism?)0-

0 It's a weird one isn't it. 'Thanks much' just sounds plain wrong but there isn't really a good reason why. 0-

0 How about this? We don't use 01b00much 02b00in the affirmative, except after 01b00so02b00, 01b00very02b00, 01b00too 02b00etc.02br
00According to this, 01b00thanks much02b00 is wrong, while 01b00thanks 01u00very 02u00much02b00

0This has kept popping into my head all day (I know, I need to get out more!). 00 00Is there just something about the implied quantity of ‘much’ that’s making this sound weird? 00 00After all, I’m comfortable with “thanks a lot”, “thanks a million”, “thanks a bunch”.00 00Perhaps it just needs a quantity that can be quantified… if you know what I mean?02br

Hi, I lived in eastern Indiana some twenty five years ago, and my friends at highschool used "Thanks much" a lot. Till today I've thought it is an expression commonly used among people. I'll be careful not to use it any more.

I see no need to avoid it in casual situations.

My older brother is another one who likes to say, 'thanks muchly'.

Hi,

Thanks mucho ( said with Spanish exaggeration).

I must have been a space cadet. "My friends at highschool" should have been "my friends from high school."
