It's very difficult to give an adequate answer without context, but I'll try. You might see: I received the package in today's mail and I thank you for the same. The same = the package (and the fact that the other person had sent it).

"Thank you for the same" - Hindu-English version of saying : "Thank you for performing what (was) / I requested" or something like that. That sentence is almost that hilarious as "please do the needful".
Once you get to work a lot with Hindu guys you get used to their understanding of English.

Ps. No need to explain that this is incorrect. They just don't get it :-)
