thanks for much

First post here. I have lived in the US for quite a few years by now, but sometimes I still come across questions about English usage that are too trivial to raise during regular conversations. So I think I have found a perfect forum here.

Somebody wrote me a letter saying "thanks for much for coming to visit and..."

First I thought it was a mis-typing and what she really meant was "thanks so much for...", but a quick 'googling' has indicated many people are actually using this same phrase. Can you confirm if this is correct? (The two 'for's sound a bit repetitive to me.)

Sounds like a grammatical mistake to me. Americans do like using words incorrectly. I hear "supposably" and "irregardless" a lot in typical conversations.

Interesting post. I noticed I picked recently picked the phrase "Thanks so Much" and am hearing it from other people. Does anyone know if this is a recent trend and when it started?
