Should I write thankful to somebody or thankful for somebody?

to somebody for something usually.
I am thankful to you for the gift. The thankful feeling goes to you. The gift came from you to me. The gift caused the thankful feeling.

You can leave out either phrase.
I am thankful to you. My thankful feeling goes to you. No cause for the thankful feeling is given.

If you are thankful for somebody, it means in very general terms that you are glad that person exists.

If you are religious, you might think of it that you are thankful (to ***) for (the gift of) somebody.
