Thank you in advance

I read somewhere that using "thank you in advance" at the end of a letter or after we request something from someone is kind of impolite and rude, is it true ?

I'm not fond of it, but just because of its brevity. I'd prefer something like "I will really appreciate any help you can give me in this matter" or "I'd be very grateful if you could assist me". better than nothing.

On these forums, however, I think the short form is fine...better than nothing.

what if I write only "thank you" at the end of my post ? Is it correct ? (I mean in the first post when nobody has answered yet)

I think it's fine. There are many posters who don't even say "please," so adding a "thank you" is appreciated. At least by me. And I expect, by others.
