Thank you for your help!!!! - LOM/ Master programme

Dear Mountainhiker, Dear Nona,

I am following the EnglishForum.com since a month, and first of all I want to tell you that you are doing a great job! You help my fellows and me in a really impressive way to improve in their letters! THANK YOU!!! (W)

Again, I would like to ask you for your advice- even more than HOW it is written - ( I am very thankful for spellchecking and improvements on impressions) I would like to ask you on WHAT I wrote.

The question of the University for my master programme application is as follows: "Please use this space to describe your special academic interests, and your purpose and objective in undertaking graduate study".

Below you find my answer. It is a little different of what I found in the English forum. I would like to ask you to comment on:
- What is your overall impression?
- Do you miss something?
- Is there anything to much?
- What would you change?

- Spellcheck, Spellcheck, etc. Emotion: wink

Thank you very, very much!!!!

I am very interested in undertaking postgraduate studies in Human Resource Management at your “Industrial Relations” faculty. The masters programme would play an important role in my overall curriculum and in the achievement of both my personal and professional goals.

Personally, my interest in Human Resource Management is not new. But my curiosity and my “thirst” for more understanding in this field remain unsatisfied. Through this application for postgraduate studies I aim to meet this need for a wider theoretical background.

The desire for more theory is not my sole purpose. My chief concern is to study in an international team of like-minded fellow students and professors, with enough space for enriching discussions, thoughtful reflections and exchange of experiences. All these things combined would give me a better understanding and a critical awareness towards current and future Human Resource Management development.

Professionally, my goal is to join a leading university as a faculty member undertaking research and teaching in Human Resource Management/ Development. I aspire to combine this academic career in the long-term with a profession in the Human Resource Development of an international company or organisation. The link between academic research and its application to business, practiced and appreciated during undergraduate education, is of particular importance to me.

The MA programme of your institution will encourage me to achieve my goals as described above. It will contribute to the furtherance of my three chief development needs: acquisition of a sound theoretical foundation in Human Resource Management (1), advancement of my academic interests (2), and introduction to academic research and teaching (3). I will now expand upon these three aspects.

(1) My present professional development clearly reveals my affinity for the world of Human Resources. As recently as my European Business Studies course, I headed in this direction. Participating in the ”International Business School Network (IBSN)” programme, I studied first at the “Universidad Italiana” in Italy and then at the German “Business School”. This international education not only gave me a strong background in economics and European business culture, but also allowed me to qualify in the subject that attracted me most: Human Resource Management/ Development.

During periods of practical experience, I had the opportunity, amongst other things, to conduct the recruitment of young professionals for ”company1”, to develop a master training plan for “company2” and to implement e-learning modules at “company3”. The practical experience, blended with lectures in Psychology, Psycho-sociology and Organisational Development, reinforced my interest in the subject. My dissertation discussed the introduction of e-learning modules into the training plan of the company “company2”, evaluating the impact on companies´ personnel development targets. Thanks to my specific background in e-learning, I qualified for my current employment in Italy designing and implementing global training solutions for corporate enterprises.

I aim to expand and consolidate my widespread but mainly practical experience in Training and Development through complementary studies. The acquisition of a sound academic basis in Human Resource Management, together with the possibility of studying a subject in depth, and acquiring knowledge at an advanced level, makes undertaking postgraduate studies extremely appealing to me. Beyond doubt, a masters course at “University” will accelerate my professional development in the area of Human Resources and a MA in Human Resource Management from your institution will greatly increase my career opportunities.

(2) To advance my academic interests is one of my key purposes for applying to join your programme. The course matches precisely my particular interests in Human Resources: namely, human resource development, organisational learning, knowledge transfer and management within human organizations, and the psychological aspects of learning.
I hope to stimulate my academic interests throughout the programme and to focus on my field of research in order to carry out my aspiration to study for a PhD in due course.

(3) The reason for choosing your school is its high reputation for producing outstanding graduates, being on the cutting edge of academic research in Human Resources. I consider it the perfect environment for introducing myself to the academic world; initially, the training in research skills will lay the foundation for advanced study. Furthermore, I will be able to have direct contact with investigation activities, professors and expertise in the subject area. I would welcome the opportunity to get involved in research activities at the faculty level. Hereafter, I will be pleased not only to obtain knowledge and gain proficiency, but also to transfer knowledge by teaching in the future, this having always been one of my favourite activities.

With regard to my professional vision, your MA course in Human Resource Management is the natural choice for me at this point in my career. It would be, on one hand, a move towards achieving my professional goals, and, on the other, a way to quench my “thirst” for more knowledge in the discipline of Human Resources.

Hi, Sorry it has taken so long to have a read through your LOM. This is quite nicely written but it seems a bit on the long side to me. I also got a bit confused at this part - Human Resource Management (1), advancement of my academic interests (2), and introduction to academic research and teaching (3).
