In Google,

2. Thanks a lot. 5,190,000

3. Thanks very much. 2,670,000

4. Thank you a lot. 123,000

According to Practical English Usage, 2005, #4 is not acceptable in British English.

Is it acceptable in American English?

"Thanks much" is also one of the ways to thank, but I am not sure if it is formal or informal.

I definitely disagree! I'd say this is said all the time, and is perfectly normal. It's a standard phrase.

"Gutenberg.org" is an online collection of English books ever published. I always check grammaticality of any sentences with this corpus.
