Hi there, is there a huge difference in formality between the words "thank you" and "thanks"? Would you consider "thanks" to be informal? Thanks resp. thank you! ;-)

"Thank you" is more formal.

If I asked my boss for a higher salary and he'd accept my request I wouldn't say "thanks".

To me, "thanks" seems to be less serious. If someone just lends you a pen in school for a minute, "thanks" shouldn't be a problem.
