Than would

I read the following sentence from a text book, but I don't understand why it is "would external auditors" instead of "external auditors would".

"This implies that internal auditors will review the control systems within an organisation in much more detail than would external auditors because they are not simply concerned with material error."

Word order can sometimes vary. This particular order is sometimes used with a sentence using 'than' in this way.
eg Tom will get marks in this class than would Mary.
But it's also OK to say Tom will get marks in this class than Mary would.

Clive -- I think something is missing from your sample sentences. Perhaps "better marks"?
