Than vs then

Ok I understand (and am pretty good with) the normal difference between Then vs Than but this sentence has me doubting myself. Since it's comparing something but also dealing with time. Would be thankful for some outside guidance.

It was farther away then/than when it had started.

Thanks.

This is possible: It was farther away then (= at that time) than when it had started.

Thanks! That's exactly what was bugging me, The then/than is specifically referring to the fact that a few minutes earlier it was in a different place.

Suddenly, he felt the thing move. The signal had increased the distance between them. It was farther away than when it had started.
