The one I bought was thicker than usual

Think of the meaning this way.
eg The steak that I bought was thicker than the usual steak that I buy.

Thanks for your response,

I think we, but not entirely sure, can also say, the steak that I bought was thicker than the steak I usually buy.

so why not,the steak that I bought was thicker than usually?

Sorry to further complicate matters.

Yes, your long-form sentence with 'usually' is correct. But when you shorten it, it is hard for me to see that 'usually' modifies the implicit verb 'buy'.

It's really a matter of what is idiomatic and natural to native speakers.

This is a fixed phrase. There is no logic involved.

If you want to use "usually," it has to modify a verb (like "buy" or "do") rather than a noun (like "steak").

I bought a thicker steak than I usually do.
