I would like to know if the word "that" is optional or if it should always be used in a construction like this:
I was offered teaching jobs from two high schools, but I I have not made a decision yet because the pay would be much lower than (that) from my current school.

You could omit 'that' in this specific sentence, but that doesn't mean you can always omit it in this kind of construction. I would rephrase with something like the following: ... because the salary would be much lower than I'm currently making.
