Than -- preposition or conjunction

Good night, have a nice dream.

1. There are more brownies in a box than in a sachet.

The sentence is correct only if the "than" above is a preposition. If not, the sentence should be changed as follows because it is a conjunction.

2. There are more brownies in a box than there are in a sachet.

Is "than" a preposition or conjunction?

Thank you.

It is a conjunction in both sentences but there is no necessity to change #1 to #2. Conjunctions can join other parts of speech: I am going in my car or on the train.
