Than me or than I

Which of these two sentences is correct:

1. She is bigger than me

2. She is bigger than I

I know people usually say 'than me', but I don't really understand why. 'than me' sounds incorrect to me, because you can say: 'she is bigger than I am.', but you can't say: 'she is bigger than me am.'

Grammatically, you are absolutely correct! Coloquially, many people say "bigger than me" - but that doesn't make it right. (let's wait for JTT)

Some grammarians consider "than" a preposition in that context. Prepositions require the objective case, hence "me".

It depends on the situation.

If you are taking the TOEFL, this is correct:

2. She is bigger than I.

However, if you are speaking informally with friends, this sounds more natural:

1. She is bigger than me.

Hi, I was always taught: He is bigger than I am or He is bigger than me.
