Than it was?

A student altered the grade on his paper to make it seem higher than it actually was.

I don't understand why a verb "was" is used not did

For example, Hawaii was colder than LA was.

He liked Math more than she did. <= In this way, shouldn't "was" be changed to did?

It is his grade that we are referring to here.

For example:-

His grade is 80. He changed his grade to 90.
His grade was 80. His grade is now 90.

His grade is higher than it was.
