Than do Palestinians or Than Palestinians do?

I was reading an editorial by the Jerusalem Post recently. I was wondering, which is more correct and why:

"In short, a nation that meets many more prerequisites for self-determination than do Palestinians – and other Mideastern constructs of yesteryear’s Western imperialism" - ORIGINAL

In short, a nation that meets many more prerequisites for self-determination than (the) Palestinians do – and other Mideastern constructs of yesteryear’s Western imperialism - Suggested Alternative

Hi, Neither position for 'do' is wrong, but #1 is more stylish. Note that neither of the two is a complete sentence. They have no main clause.
