Text: some what confusing

'The greek word 'eros' denotes want, like, THE DESIRE FOR THAT WHICH IS MISSING . The lover wants what it does not have, it is by definition impossible for him to have what he wants if, it is no longer wanted.'

Can someone explain what the above means its for a academic book I am reading (Eros The Bittersweet). I understand most of it its just the capitals that confuse me?

Hi Anisah, Welcome to English Forums. I hope you enjoy yourself here. 'Eros' in my dictionary simply means 'love, desire', so I presume your author is discussing connotations in the original Greek.

  • In any case, 'THE DESIRE FOR THAT WHICH IS MISSING' should be interpreted literally, just as it is explained in the subsequent sentence-- wanting what we do not have, loving what we desire.

anisah,

Mister Micawber gave the correct answer. Did you have trouble understanding or interpreting his answer and want it said in a different manner? Otherwise, there is not much more to add.

I agree with the other posts. "the desire for that which is missing" means "wanting what one does not have".
