Dear Teachers,

Can we use “text” as a synonym for "lyrics" when talking about songs? Could you tell me, please? Thank you.

In my opinion, 'text' can be used instead if lyrics because it doesn't sound grammatically incorrect. But, our mind tends to associate text with words and textbooks but not poetic verses. So, you could consider using 'verse' or 'lines' instead of lyrics when talking about songs.

In this context, I think that "verse" would normally be understood to refer to one unit in a "verse-chorus-verse-chorus..." structure, not the lyrics in general.

By the way ... in a case where "lyrics" seems too fancy, you can just refer to the "words" of a song.
