Here is a sentence:
There is no chance of you getting the promotion after only two months working here, .... the great work you have done.
a. regardless
b. presuming
c. nevertheless
d. notwithstanding
I've checked that the correct answer is d: NOTWITHSTANDING. Though, I can't understand why it can't be c: NEVERTHELESS. To me, both answers fit.
Thank you!

"notwithstanding" is a preposition whose object is the noun phrase "the great work you have done". "nevertheless" is an adverb; it cannot modify a noun or noun phrase, or take a noun phrase as an object. This would be correct: There is no chance of you getting the promotion after only two months working here.

There was a comma in the original sentence, not a full-stop. Does it mean that the initial phrase was not completely correct? Or even for the original sentence with comma, does "notwithstanding" fit better?
