Testing as adjective

If I am testing a software, can I say

'The testing is in progress'

I see your point, andrea, but surely "the testing is in progress" is idiomatic and common.

I'm curious about the title of the thread. It's hard to imagine "testing" as an adjective. I guess you could say, "The testing equipment has been stolen." "Test" would probably be more common.

In the example, "testing" is a gerund; and practically any verb may be so used. "Surfing is f

So I can say

The testing is in progress

The tests are in progress

The test is in progress

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I think whether or not "Dinner is served!" is a true sentence is a grey area. I could go either way. I'm constantly amused by the number of different ways professional grammarians look at things.
Almost by definition, some idioms defy the rules.
