How about the verb SUSTAIN in this context?

The rapid recovery of the patients who took the new drug sustains its effect.

Does not sound good to me...

In the dictionary I found the following definition for the verb 'sustain':

formal : to show that (something) is true or correct : to confirm or prove (something) ? The report sustains their story/claims. ? The evidence does not sustain a guilty verdict.

But I guess in our example it is not acceptable.

The rapid recovery of the patients
