Tested/challenged

Does the highlighted "tested" in the following text mean "challenged"?

Context:

Rather than providing some sort of exposition of the efficacy or benefits of the product, Kaye succeeds in transcending functionality to create a piece that uses the product as a pretext for the outlet of the imagination and which, in the spirit of Romanticism, extends the bounds of experience.
