Hi everyone,

Again I was solving some test questions without any problem when I came up with this two questions and I couldn't find the answers though they are not that hard.

1- While students and educators ..... speak of the need for greater "relevance" in what is taught, opinions as to what is relevant varies gently.

A) alike b) as much C) likely D) though E) such as In this question, alike blinks me but I am not sure of its real meaning in this context.

2- GArdening is an artistic activity in...... it deals with the grouping of plants in harmonious and pleasing arrangements.

A) which B) what C) where D) that R) whom I choose A but the key says it should be D

I will be happy if you can help me.

All the alternatives seem wrong to me. I would say:

1. While both students and educators speak of the need for greater "relevance" in what is taught, opinions as to what is relevant vary greatly.

2. Gardening is an artistic activity which it deals with the grouping of plants in harmonious and pleasing arrangements.

Those who are responsible for these questions should be taught some basic English grammar.

1A. It means that students and educators speak of the need to the same extent. Purely in terms of grammar, C would also be correct, the meaning is less likely, so the examiner would call C wrong.

2- Gardening is an artistic activity in...... it deals with the grouping of plants in harmonious and pleasing arrangements.

A) which B) what C) where D) that R) whom I choose A but the key says it should be D

2D is correct. The phrase 'in that' is a standard way of introducing a more detailed explanation.

2A ('which') will not fit this syntax. You'd need to say an artistic activity which deals with.

= ... is an artistic activity in this way: It deals with ...

=~ ... is an artistic activity from the point of view that it deals with ...

blink is almost certainly the wrong word.

Are you saying that it looks right to you? At least a little?

Blink at meis a direct translation from Turkish but obviously it doesn't work for English and it means it seems correct to me.

I know I shouldn't use direct translations from my native language but I like it. I feel myself like Shakespeare. ( You know he introduced new words to English.)

And anyway, I'm sure people didn't understand him either when he first introduced his new words into English!
