Tertium non datur

Hello,

Can anyone explain the literally meaning of "datur" in this phrase? The phrase appears in a book in English.

I have looked up on a dictionary, and got the defintion-no third 

possibility
is given. A logical axiom that a claim is either true or false, with no third option.

tertium = the third
