"Tension" is the state of having...

1) "Tension" is the state of having the muscles stretched tight, especially as causing strain or discomfort.

Is "as" a preposition here? Can I also write the underlined part as:

"Tension" is the state of having the muscles stretched tight, especially so as to cause strain or discomfort.

Or simply:

"Tension" is the state of having the muscles stretched tight, especially causing strain or discomfort. (no "as")
