Tension

"A widening gap between more dynamic northern economies and shrinking southern ones is bound to fuel political tension, with a “lost generation” facing mass unemployment in several countries."

Would it make a difference if "tension" is replaced with "tensions"? How do I know when to use one form or the other?

Would it make a difference if "tension" is replaced with "tensions"?-- No.
How do I know when to use one form or the other?-- It is in the mind of the speaker: one quality of tension or several instances of tension.

Thanks you for you replies, Clive and Mr Micawber.

I guess dictionaries don't help when it comes to countable/uncountable forms.
