Tenses/back in the day ?

Could anyone please tell whether these sentences are grammatically correct

1. Jerry says that his Gymnast teacher was the worst person he met in back in the day in college. or

Jerry says that his Gymnast teacher is the worst person he met in back in the day in college.

2. Jerry says that his Gymnast teacher was the worst person he met in college back in the day. or

I think only the first part of the second option is correct

We don't use the expression "Back in the day" for something negative. The expression is used for talking about a time in the past, usually when you are remembering nice things about that time: Back in the day, I was a terrific dancer. Jerry says that when he was in college, his gym teacher was the worst person he met.
