Tenses of the sentence

Hi. Please help. Are the underlined parts correct? Should no. 1 be in past perfect, had been, instead of past? Could no. 2 be the verb "would have been deprived"? Thank you in advance.

Even if he (1) were to come alive, it would have been better for him to die, for his brain (2) had been deprived of too much oxygen.
