Tenses again.

Dear experts,

Could you please correct these uses of tenses?

1) John said (say) to me yesterday,"I Have been looking (look) for you all day. I wanted (want) to ask (ask) you something. Could you remember Betty, the girl sitting (sit) next to me last year? I haven't seen (see, not) her for a long time and I wonder (wonder) what happened (happen) to her." I answer (answer), "I hadn't known (know, not) where she have been (be). I met (meet) her a month ago and she told (tell) me that she hadn't been (be, not) in school this term because her father was (be) ill and she must work." After hearing (hear) this, John decided (decide) he visited (visit) Betty to see whether she penalty needed (need) any help.

2.I wish I had met (meet) him six months ago. If only I had seen (see) him then, many of his problems may have avoided (may, avoid). I cannot help thinking (think) that if only he had talked ( talk ) to me about what was bothering (bother) him, I could easily help (help, can, easily) him. It is no use to feel (feel) sorry about it now, but I do feel sorry for him. I am sure he could have succeeded (can, succeed) in his job last year, if he had been (be) tougher.

Thanks.
