While I was sitting on the bench, reading a book, a leaf falls on my head all of a sudden.

(Why is the answer "falls", not "fell"?)

To me 'fell' is more appropriate in most conversational contexts. I would have said 'fell'.

However, if this is from a novel or poem, we might consider it a case of artistic license.
