Tenses

A: Pete said James can't come to the party because he's sick.

B: How does he know?

A: He had/has/https://sr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%C3%98&action=edit&redlink=1 apparently talked to him.

I'm leaning towards had since I want to emphasize Pete had talked to James before he told us James wouldn't be coming to the party, but can any other option work here?

All of your choices work. You can use 'had' if you want the emphasis you mentioned; however, I think most people would agree on the sequence of events regardless of your verb choice. CJ
