Tenses?

I had just broken his arm but his eyes had already forgotten all about that.

I'm curious as to why the past perfect is used in the second part of the sentence (had already forgotten). It sounds fine to me, but would anyone care to explain why the past simple (his eyes already forgot all about that) would be wrong?

If you say "his eyes already forgot about that" then the time of "his eyes forgot" is not properly placed prior to the time as of which his eyes are being described.

If you say "his eyes already forgot about that" then the time of "his eyes forgot" is not properly placed prior to the time as of which his eyes are being described.
