Tenses

Did I use the correct tenses here?

Why did you go to Poland last year?
Because my friend's been there before and he told me his trip had been great.

I used the present perfect because I wanted to say that my friend had been there in the past but I didn't want to "connect" it to the fact that he told me his trip had been great. I hope you understand what I mean.. Thank you !

Necrophagist I used the present perfect because I wanted to say that my friend had been there in the past but I didn't want to "connect" it to the fact that he told me his trip had been great. I hope you understand what I mean. I understand what you mean, but it is irrelevant to the use of past perfect, which is not needed in your sentence.

Because my friend's been there before and he told me his trip was (the past perfect is OK, but simple past is more likely to be used) great.
