Tenses

"Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi was playing Mirallas onside, when he gets through the defence, he then has the awareness to pick out Romelu Lukaku, who was stood still in the area and sends City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo the wrong way." (BBC Sport website.)
Is there any grammatical agreement in using the past tense together with the present one in the sport reporting above?

The inelegant mixture of tenses is not the only problem with the passage. Sportswriting is most often impromptu, and not carefully edited. Composing with proper grammar is not their primary objective.
