I told my boss yesterday that I wanted to give in my notice because I --------- a better job.
found had found were found have found

correct answer: found

I encountered this question in a an online grammar test. I do not understand why "had found" wouldn´t be the correct answer.

I much prefer 'had found'.

It certainly seems more logical given that 'want' has been backshifted.

Thank you. I even would have thought "found" to be incorrect, because the job was found prior to the resignation.
