Tenses

Could someone please help me with the tenses in the following sentences.

1) I told them to put away the things they were using after they were done.
2) I told them to put away the things they are using after they are done.

I understand 1 to be correct in the following two scenarios:
a) If they were using those things at some point in the past and are probably not using them any longer.
b) If they are still using those things and I told them to put them away at some point in the past.

And I understand 2 to be correct only if:
They are still using those things.

Am I right?
