Search terms like present, past, perfect, active, passive, continuous.

In very simple terms, tense gives a time dimension to a sentence. It tells us about when the action happens. There are three time periods, and these are the simple tenses In English- the past, the present (now), and the future.

In English, tense can also give information on the nature of the action in the time dimension.
Did the action happen at one time, or did it continue over a time period?

It can also give information about the subject and receiver of the action:
Did the subject do the action, or receive the action?

In English, the verb by itself can tell us only present or past. Helping verbs (have, be) are needed to form the other tenses.
