Tenses

1) I __________ on the sofa because my grandparents have been here for the weekend.
A. have slept B. am sleeping
2) We ____ too much money because we have a lot of friends and relatives coming around recently.
A. have spent B. are spending
Answer:
1) B; 2) A

I cannot see the substantial difference between the two sentences. For Sentence 1, I think the answer should be "am sleeping" or "have been sleeping"; for Sentence 2, I think A and B are both correct.

With the use of present perfect, I would have to guess that the intended meaning is that the grandparents are still here. And if so, I hope that no one is teaching that the underlined is the preferred way to express that.
