1-This semester in their literature class they study Marlowe.

2-This semester in their literature class they are studying Marlowe.

Assuming that the semester has already begun, which of the above sentences will be used in each of the
following cases:

a-They are only studying Marlowe
b-They study Marlowe and other authors

c-the study of Marlowe is interrupted by the study of other authors

Yes it is a one-semester course, but the programme changes every year.

In that case, #1 is wrong and #2 is right. It could mean either A or B grammatically, but realistically, no class is going to spend a semester solely or mainly on Christopher Marlowe.
