(tense)Finally, I realize the problem I have now! Plz Help!
Hi, everyone! I have several questions on past perfect tense that I need your help! Please read the following passage first: "He had stayed in his father's firm till his father died. Then he had started his own business and was now a very successful man."
Q1) The last sub-sentence: was now a very successful man=> Is the use of past tense (was now) also implies that the man is still a successful man now(present)? If so, why don't we use present tense instead of it?The use of Past perfect tense is to describe an event that occur before another past event at a definite time.e.g. When I had had my breakfast I went to school
Q2) In daily conversation, are we always use past perfect with past tense? is there any situation we use it alone?what is the difference between the following 2 sentences(sense of time? completion?, etc)A) He had left his case on the 4.40pm train.B) He left his case on the 4.40pm train.Thank you for your help!

Q1) The last clause: was now a very successful man=> Is the use of past tense (was now) also implies that the man is still a successful man now(present)?-- No. This biography could have happened 100 years ago.
Q2) In daily conversation, are we always use past perfect with past tense? is there any situation we use it alone?- Yes, as you did in A:
Refer to my question 2, do you mean that we always use past perfect tense alone in our daily conversation?-- 'Always'? Of course not. Where did I say that?
If so, will it be too strange if someone just say:"I had left my case on the 4.40pm train." and end up his speech.-- Not strange if more of the conversation relates that sentence to another past event.
