Grammar

Tense shifting within a sentence.

Is this grammatically correct?

"I support abortion, and all I got was excommunication."

The sentence is as such, because the speaker still supports abortion. Personally, the sentence sounds awkward to me. Is there something wrong with this sentence (and I just don't know how to explain it), or am I just asserting a senseless subjective preference by insisting that it's awkward? Emotion: indifferent

This is the author of the post, by the way!

Thanks for answering, Clive. I changed the original word to "abortion." Let's just treat the sentence as, "I support so-and-so, and all I got was excommunication."

I don't know how to explain why it sounds awkward.

Hi,

The 'and all I got' seems to root the whole sentence firmly in the past. It seems to indicate that the speaker is thinking exclusively about the past.

'I support A, and I got B' does not sound quite so awkward.

Hello again, Clive.

Are you suggesting to modify the sentence from "I support the so-and-so bill, and all I got was excommunication," to "I support the so-and-so bill, and I got excommunicated?" Certainly, the revision does not sound awkward at all.

My next question then is:

How is "and all I got was excommunication" different from "and I got excommunicated?" What m

Hi again,

Are you suggesting to modify the sentence from "I support the so-and-so bill, and all I got was excommunication," to "I support the so-and-so bill, and I got excommunicated?" Certainly, the revision does not sound awkward at all. No, I'm not suggesting that. I just mentioned that to demonstrate the impact of removing 'and all I got'.
