Tense sequencing in an essay

Is there a simple rule how past and present tenses can be mixed? If I write "My major subject is accounting. I chose it because I was/I am good at mathematics". Which one is correct? At the time I made my choice I was good at mathematics but on the other hand I am still good at mathematics.

Since you are still good at mathematics, and since the events you are talking about are not in distant history (as you say your major subject is accounting), I would use "am".
