Tense Question

Hi teachers.

There is a tense related multiple choice question. I could't figure out how to solve it. Here it is:

Hilda ---- to bring up her two sons quite well for a single parent who ---- a widow six years ago.

A) had managed / became
B) has been managing / became
C) is managing / had become
D) managed / has become
E) has managed / was becoming

Which one is the best answer? Actually, there is only one correct answer according to the author.

Thank you

Hi Clive.

The expression "six years ago" requires simple past tense. I don't think C-D and E are correct options.

I think B is the correct choice but I didn't understand the sentence. Hilda is a female but who is the widow? What does "for a single parent" mean?

Thank you.

A death is a single event. That rules out (E)

Hilda has been a single parent for five years. During that time she raised her sons. She is still raising her sons.
So you need a continuous tense (past) for the first verb.

A widow is a woman whose husband died.
A married woman becomes a widow when her husband dies.

A single parent is either a mother who has no husband or a father who has no wife.

I agree with your choice of B.

Have you received enough information to understand the sentence?
