Tense question.

It was the spectacle of monkeys sucking the refreshing juices around the beans that first_______men the idea of tasting them.
A) to have given
B) gave
The answer is "a" but can't I also use "to have given" I learned that when I see first/ second things like that I should use "to infinitive" like this sentence:
He is the first person to go there.

When confronted with a wordy structure, simplify it:

It was the spectacle...that first gave men the idea.

(X) It was the spectacle...that first to have given men the idea.

As you should be able to see, the clause needs a finite verb. There is no 'that' clause in your own example; it is a different structure. This is the equivalent of your example:
