Tense problem in this ONE sentence?

What tense would you use in this sentence please?

1 As she woke up, he was going broke playing cards./As she was waking up, he was going broke/As she was waking up, he went broke. (he was playing card while she was sleeping)

By the time she woke up, he had gone broke. She woke up and he had already lost the game.
As she woke up, he went broke. She woke up and at the very same moment he lost.

As is strange here. Because you can go broke or lose the game at once. It is static. You have money to go on or you're free to go.
