I know this might have been asked dozens of times, but I really need help with the tense of the following sentence:
From London Peter has gone to Oxford to see friends of mine.
Or is it:
From London Peter went to Oxford to see friends of mine.
Background information: Peter is still in Oxford and there's no indication of time which is why I'm not sure which tense to use. Somehow Present Perfect sounds strange to me but I can't explain why. Still, in the abstract, it would have to be Present Perfect, wouldn't it? Thank you so much for your answers!

Both sentences are fine and natural if he went to Oxford in the recent past.
