Tense probem in theses sentences please help me

Could you help me with the tenses in these sentences?

1 My phone was working/worked when I woke up in the morning.

2 I hate (it) when people don’t look at me when I talk to them.

3 She doesn’t even realise she’s talking/talks to herself.

4 You should give me a present for all the things you made me go to/through

5 Just because I’m sitting back there doesn’t I can’t/won’t hear them speak/speaking.

6 Would you rather we paid/pay you and then asked you to pay us back?

How come both are correct?

I don't know exactly. I've heard it both ways. There's probably some complicated explanation that claims "pay" is more real, and "paid" is more unreal.

Doesn't it sound weird having two WHENS

This one doesn't bother me, though you're right that sometimes repeating the same word (any word) too often can seem weird.
